The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache CloudStack™ as a Top-Level Project

Mature, Open Source turn-key platform widely used for delivering scalable, full-featured Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds.

Forest Hill, MD –25 March 2013– The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced that Apache CloudStack has graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a Top-Level Project (TLP), signifying that the Project's community and products have been well-governed under the ASF's meritocratic process and principles. 

"When CloudStack first became an Apache Incubator project, it was a well-established cloud management platform with a mature codebase," said Chip Childers, Vice President of Apache CloudStack. "Our work in the Incubator has focused on growing a really strong community around the code and establishing the governance practices expected of a top-level project within The Apache Software Foundation."

Widely used in production by many organizations, CloudStack is formerly the product of Cloud.com, which was acquired by Citrix in 2011, and was submitted to the Apache Incubator by Citrix in April 2012. 

Apache CloudStack is a complete software suite for creating Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud computing in private-, public-, and hybrid cloud environments. It has been proven to be both stable and highly scalable, underpinning production clouds with more than 30,000 physical nodes, in geo-distributed environments.

"Becoming a TLP is an important step in the project's evolution and growth," added Childers. "CloudStack had the advantage of having many long-term, large deployments which had proven the stability and scalability of the technology. This helped us concentrate on adopting the 'Apache Way' of governance, which is well understood and open, delivering so many great pieces of software over the years."

CloudStack's target environments include service providers and enterprises; it is used by many service providers to set up an on-demand, elastic cloud computing services and by enterprises to set up a private cloud for use by their own employees. Apache CloudStack is also available to individuals and organizations that wish to study and implement an IaaS for personal, educational, and/or production use.

"We believe that Infrastructure-as-a-Service is the next generation of IT infrastructure, and that people will demand open standards and open governance for such an important layer in their IT stack," explained Childers. That is why having the CloudStack project meet the rigorous standards of ASF governance is so significant."

Underscoring the ASF's edict of "Community over Code", Childers said: "we've managed to build a diverse, friendly and very open community around CloudStack. New participants receive a really warm welcome and we make sure that all contributors are on an equal footing, whether they are writing code or helping with any other aspect of the project. Anybody thinking of getting involved in the project would quickly find what a great community we are. In addition to online involvement, we've already had a global collaboration conference and there are many CloudStack groups established in many different countries."

The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache Airavata as a Top-Level Project

NSF-seeded Open Source software framework used for executing and managing small to large-scale applications and workflows across local resources, computational grids, and the Cloud.

Forest Hill, MD –-2 October 2012-– The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced that Apache Airavata has graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a Top-Level Project (TLP), signifying that the Project’s community and products have been well-governed under the ASF's meritocratic process and principles.

"Being a TLP demonstrates Apache Airavata's commitment to 'The Apache Way' and the project's ability to self-govern, and be a part of the broader ASF community,"  said Chris Mattmann, Vice President of Apache OODT and member of the Apache Tika Project Management Committee. "We are excited to continue working to integrate Apache OODT and Airavata and to work together to leverage Apache Tika for data understanding, classification and extraction in both projects."

Designed to abstract out the complexities in accessing computational resources, Apache Airavata provides API's, sophisticated server-side tools, and graphical user interfaces to construct, execute, control and manage long running applications and workflows on distributed resources including local clusters, supercomputers, national grids, academic and commercial clouds.

"Airavata was initially developed by the National Science Foundation funded collaboration - Linked Environment for Atmospheric Discovery, for creating Cyberinfrastructure systems to enable faster-than-real-time severe weather forecasts" said Suresh Marru, Vice President of Apache Airavata. "Apache Airavata has evolved into a truly open and independent platform created to interface with emerging distributed computing paradigms including High Performance, High Throughput and On-Demand Computing."

The strategy of the Airavata framework is a minimalist architectural design - a conceptually simple to understand modular, componentized software - which is easy to install, maintain and use. This service oriented architecture helps Apache Airavata to blend into diverse software systems. Early adopters of Apache Airavata includes Science Gateways which integrate applications, workflows, data collections with computational resources like Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Additional users include ParamChem, the UltaScan Laboratory Information Management System, the Leadership Class Configuration Interaction Project, and the BioVLab Project.

"Sustainability of science gateways actually can have a very significant impact on science," said Nancy Wilkins-Diehr, co-director of the XSEDE Extended Support for Communities program, which includes gateways that interface to XSEDE resources. "This important leadership in the area of Open Source, community-developed code can be a model for many other scientific software projects. It's the sustainable projects with long-term viability."

Developed on open standards, Apache Airavata is collaboratively supported by individuals from diverse institutes, corporations and non-commercial organizations from around the world. Seeded by code donations from Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute, interest in Apache Airavata continues, and the Project welcomes new participants to its growing community.

"The Airavata project began life as part of the NSF-funded Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery project," explained Marlon Pierce, Principal Investigator on the NSF-funded Open Gateway Computing Environments project and Science Gateway Group Lead at Indiana University. "We worked hard through additional NSF funding of the Open Gateway Computing Environments project to generalize the workflow software to many science (and broader) domains. For us, The Apache Software Foundation represents an important open community model as well as Open Source model for diversely-developed, sustainable scientific software. We hope to convince more in our community to follow suit."

Shahani Markus Weerawarana, Visiting Lecturer at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, added, "With its graduation as a TLP, Apache Airavata is trailblazing a path in science gateways research and development by embracing the 'Apache Way' and thereby ensuring wide international participation of software engineers, scientists, researchers and students." 

Since entering the Apache Incubator in May 2011, the Apache Airavata project has successfully produced several code releases in preparation of its first production-ready, v1.0 release.

The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache Deltacloud™ v1.0

Open Source Cloud interoperability toolkit adds EC2 Compatibility frontend

Forest Hill, MD –1 August 2012– The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced Apache Deltacloud™ v1.0.

Deltacloud provides several Web Service APIs for interacting with Cloud service providers and resources in a unified, interoperable manner. In addition, the project comprises many implementations for the most popular Clouds and provides client libraries for a wide variety of languages.

"The release of version 1.0 is a logical step in the evolution of the project," said David Lutterkort, Vice President of Apache Deltacloud. "The native Deltacloud API has reached a level of maturity that makes calling this release 1.0 very appropriate."

The Deltacloud server offers three different API frontends: a classic API, based on the API defined by the Deltacloud project itself; a frontend for the Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface standard under development by the Distributed Management Task Force; and now a frontend for the API used by Amazon's EC2.

"The EC2 frontend really just started as a 'let's see how hard this can be' prototype - we found that it was actually quite easy to add that additional API to Deltacloud. The Deltacloud codebase is very well suited to translating between cloud API's, making it possible for clients using one API to talk to clouds offering a completely different one," added Lutterkort. "Deltacloud makes it possible for clients to use the EC2 API against a VMWare vSphere installation or against OpenStack; similarly, it allows clients to use the CIMI API with Amazon's Web Services. It goes a long way towards avoiding lock-in on the cloud API level."

The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache ACE as a Top-Level Project

Open Source OSGi software distribution framework especially suited for the Cloud and embedded computing markets

Forest Hill, MD – 27 February 2012 – The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced that Apache ACE has graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a Top-Level Project (TLP), signifying that the Project's community and products have been well-governed under the ASF's meritocratic process and principles.

Apache ACE is a software distribution framework for managing and distributing modular software components, configuration data, and other artifacts to OSGi-based and related target systems.

Comprising a set of OSGi bundles, Apache ACE allows developers to easily manage the dependencies, deployment, and feedback of installed software components. This proves particularly useful when scaling across embedded and Cloud computing applications by covering the area of deploying and dynamically scaling applications in the cloud, as well as mobile platforms that would utilize ACE to create their own market or application store.

Using Apache ACE, updates and new components can be easily distributed while keeping a full history of what was installed where and during what period. In addition, ACE helps developers set up an automated development, QA/testing, staging, and production environment.
Initially donated to the Apache Incubator in 2009 by software solutions provider Luminis, a diverse and international group of developers joined the initial developers of the ACE code base to successfully form the Apache ACE community.

The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache Deltacloud as a Top-Level Project

Innovative Open Source interoperability toolkit provides any-platform access and support for all major Cloud service providers

Forest Hill, MD – 15 February 2012 – The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced that Apache Deltacloud has graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a Top-Level Project (TLP), signifying that the Project’s community and products have been well-governed under the ASF’s meritocratic process and principles.
Apache Deltacloud defines a RESTful Web Service application programming interface (API) for interacting with Cloud service providers and resources in those clouds in a unified manner. In addition, it consists of a number of implementations of this API for the most popular Clouds such as Amazon, Eucalyptus, GoGrid, IBM, Microsoft, OpenStack, Rackspace, and more. In addition to the API server, the project also provides client libraries for a wide variety of languages.

The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache Cassandra™ v1.0

"NoSQL" database plays a key role in Cloud computing by quickly handling massive workloads in real time with minimal disruption to services or systems.

"Dealing with very large amounts of data in realtime is a must for most businesses today," said Jonathan Ellis, Vice President of Apache Cassandra. The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache Whirr as a Top-Level Project

Open Source Cloud quick-start toolkit in use at Cloudera, Cloudsoft, Omixon, Outerthought, and more.

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF),  the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced that Apache Whirr has graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a Top-Level Project (TLP).

First developed inside the Apache Hadoop project in 2007 to quickly start and manage clusters running on Cloud services, Whirr entered the Apache Incubator in 2010. Apache Top-Level Projects and their communities demonstrate that they are well-governed under the Foundation’s meritocratic, consensus-driven process and principles.

"The Whirr project has demonstrated its maturity by graduating from the Apache Incubator," explained Tom White, Vice President of Apache Whirr. "We are pleased to offer users an easy way to get services up and running on Cloud hardware in minutes."

Apache Whirr provides a Cloud-neutral way to run a properly-configured system quickly through libraries, common service API, smart defaults, and command line tool. Whirr is being used for proof of concepts and a way to try out new Cloud services utilizing a variety of Apache products that include Hadoop, HBase, Cassandra, and ZooKeeper. An example of this is enterprise software providers Cloudera, who use Whirr to make it easy to try out their CDH product and run distributed clustered services.

Outerthought CEO Steven Noels said, "Outerthought was looking for a foundation framework for the enterprise cluster install tool of its Apache HBase-based Big Data platform Lily, so Apache Whirr seemed like a natural fit. Apache Traffic Server v3.0.0 Features-At-A-Glance

In the works over the past year (v2.0 was released May 2010), Apache Traffic Server v3.0.0 is the result of contributions from more than 30 developers and contributors. Technical highlights include:

I. Contributions

- Over 1,000 "commits" (code, patches, or documentation written directly to the code repository);
- 380+ bug tickets resolved;
- 10 releases have been made during the development phase (v2.1.0 - 2.1.9)

II. New features/improvements

- Full 64-bit support;
- Client side IPv6 support;
- WCCP (Web Cache Communication Protocol);
- Clustering is functional and supported (many benefits include an efficient distributed cache);
- Major plug-in API improvements, making the APIs more feature rich and easier to use;
- Support for many platforms, including OSX, Solaris and FreeBSD (Linux, of course, was always supported);
- New improved RAM cache algorithms, for better performance and memory utilization
- Many configurations are now configurable per transaction (or per mapping rule)
- Many improvements in statistics and management APIs;
- Multiple accept threads, and a dedicated DNS thread:
- Build environment is now much more flexible, and package owner friendly;
- Many, many bug fixes for improved stability and functionality.

III. Performance improvements

- Overall throughput is 2-3x improved over v2.0 (depending on the traffic patterns)
- Response latency is up to 5x better than v2.0
- Benchmark: Serving small objects out of RAM cache, a high end server has showed over 220,000 requests / second
- Benchmark: Serving small objects that are not cacheable, the same high end server could proxy 100,000 requests / second

Apache Traffic Server is a Cloud Computing "edge" service, able to handle requests in and out of the Cloud, both by serving static content (images, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML files), and routing requests for dynamic content to a Web server (such as the Apache HTTP Server).

"Traffic Server is battle hardened, serving terrabytes of data in real-life deployments where immediate content delivery is critical," said Apache Traffic Server Vice President Leif Hedstrom. "V3.0.0 builds upon that foundation, with new features and functionality, improved efficiency and performance, increased uptime, and overall easier to use.”

Apache Traffic Server is a fast, scalable, and extensible HTTP/1.1 compliant caching proxy server designed to improve:

 - Caching: improves response time while reducing server load and bandwidth needs by caching and reusing frequently-requested Web pages, images, and Web service calls;
 - Proxying: easily add keep-alive, filter or anonymize content requests, or add load balancing by adding a proxy layer;
 - Speed: scales well on modern SMP hardware, handling tens of thousands of requests per second;
 - Extensibility: APIs allow for customized plug-ins, from modifying headers and content to implementing new protocol handlers;
 - Reliability: successfully handles hundreds of terrabytes of data, both as forward and reverse proxies

Apache Traffic Server v.3.0.0 has been benchmarked to handle more than of 200,000 requests per second -- a 277% improvement over v2.0’s already-impressive rates. Used in production in a variety of large-scale deployments, companies such as Yahoo! rely on Apache Traffic Server to handle over 400 terrabytes of traffic, and has used the project to serve more than 30 billion objects daily across its various properties including the Yahoo! homepage, and its Sports, Mail, and Finance sites.

The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache Libcloud as a Top-Level Project

Vendor-neutral, Standard Client Library Interfaces with Leading Cloud Computing Providers Including Amazon EC2, Eucalyptus, IBM Cloud, and Rackspace Cloud

25 May 2011 —FOREST HILL, MD—The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is pleased to announce that Apache Libcloud has graduated from the Apache Incubator as a Top-Level Project (TLP).

Apache Libcloud is an Open Source Python library that provides a vendor-neutral interface to cloud provider APIs. The current version of Apache Libcloud includes backend drivers for more than twenty leading providers including Amazon EC2, Rackspace Cloud, GoGrid and Linode. Graduation signifies that both the Apache Libcloud product and community have been well-governed under the Foundation’s meritocratic, consensus-driven process and principles.

"Graduation is a terrific milestone for Libcloud and will help make it a top choice for anyone looking at cloud management solutions," said Anthony Elder, ASF Vice President and Libcloud Incubation mentor.

Diversification Without Vendor Lock-in
Libcloud was accepted to the Apache Incubator in November 2009 with a primary focus on cloud computing functionality, and since that time has developed a strong community and preliminary support for more cloud services such as cloud storage and load-balancers as a service. With one simple API, operations teams can write once and deploy anywhere, avoiding vendor lock-in.

Original Libcloud developer and Cloudkick co-founder/CEO Alex Polvi said, "I'm happy to see that Libcloud has grown into such a successful community-based Open Source project."

"Our goal going forward is to support all the major cloud services offered by different providers," explained Apache Libcloud Vice President Tomaz Muraus. The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache Cassandra 0.7


Highly-scalable Open Source Distributed Database for Handling Large Amounts of Data is a Key Component in Cloud Computing

Forest Hill, MD – 11 January 2011 – The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced Apache Cassandra v0.7, the highly-scalable, second generation Open Source distributed database.

"Apache Cassandra is a key component in cloud computing and other applications that deal with massive amounts of data and high query volumes," said Jonathan Ellis, Vice President of Apache Cassandra. "It is particularly successful in powering large web sites with sharp growth rates."

Apache Cassandra is successfully deployed at organizations with active data sets and large server clusters, including Cisco, Cloudkick, Digg, Facebook, Rackspace, and Twitter. The largest Cassandra cluster to date contains over 400 machines.

"Running any large website is a constant race between scaling your user base and scaling your infrastructure to support it," said David King, Lead Developer at Reddit. "Our traffic more than tripled this year, and the transparent scalability afforded to us by Apache Cassandra is in large part what allowed us to do it on our limited resources. Among the new features in Apache Cassandra v0.7 are:

- Secondary Indexes, an expressive, efficient way to query data through node-local storage on the client side;

- Large Row Support, up to two billion columns per row;

- Online Schema Changes – automated online schema changes from the client API allow adding and modifying object definitions without requiring a cluster restart.

The official conference, trainings, and expo of The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) returns to Atlanta this November, with dozens of technical, business, and community-focused sessions at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Over the past decade, the ASF has gone from strength to strength, developing and shepherding nearly 150 Top-Level Projects and new initiatives in the Apache Incubator and Labs. This year's ApacheCon celebrates how Apache technologies have sparked creativity, challenged processes, streamlined development, improved collaboration, launched businesses, bolstered economies, and improved lives.

We are proud of our achievements and recognize that the global Apache community --both developers and users-- are responsible for the success and popularity of our products.

The ApacheCon Planning Team are soliciting 50-minute technical presentations for the next conference, which will focus on the theme “Servers, the Cloud, and Innovation”.

We are particularly interested in highly-relevant, professionally-directed presentations that demonstrate specific probrlems and real-world solutions. Part of the technical program has already been planned; we welcome proposals based on the following Apache Projects and related technical areas:

- Cassandra/NoSQL
- Content Technologies
- (Java) Enterprise Development
- Felix/OSGi
- Geronimo
- Hadoop + friends/Cloud Computing
- Lucene, Mahout + friends/Search
- Tomcat
- Tuscany

Submissions are open to anyone with relevant expertise: ASF affiliation is not required to present at, attend, or otherwise participate in ApacheCon.

Please keep in mind that whilst we encourage submissions that the highlight the use of specific Apache solutions, we are unable to accept marketing/commercially-oriented presentations.

Other proposals, such as panels, or those longer than 50 minutes in duration have been considered in the past. You are welcome to submit an alternate presentation, however, such sessions are accepted under exceptional circumstances. Please be as descriptive as possible, including names/bios of proposed panelists and any related details.

All accepted speakers (not co-presenters) qualify for general conference admission and a minimum of two nights lodging at the conference hotel. Additional hotel nights and travel assistance are possible, depending on the number of presentations given and type of assistance needed.

To submit a presentation proposal, please send an email to cfp AT apachecon DOT com containing the following information in plaintext (no attachments, please):

1. Your full name, title, and organization

2. Contact information, including your address

3. The name of your proposed session (keep your title simple and relevant to the topic)
