ApacheCon Q&A with Machine Learning Track Leader Felix Cheung (Part Three of Three)

At ApacheCon North America, Felix Cheung, member of the Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache Spark, Zeppelin, and Incubator, will be leading the Big Data, Machine Learning and Streaming tracks. Below is what to expect from the Machine Learning Track. Also, be sure to check out Felix’s full podcast interview on our Machine Learning Track Feathercast. Plus, find the full series of ApacheCon Q&As and Feathercasts interviews with Felix and other track leaders below along with helpful links..

Q: Tell us about the Machine Learning Track?

A: We have two tracks on machine learning focused on platform innovations and deep learning. We have several new projects and some of these are incubating projects like TVM, MXNet, and Project Submarine, which is part of Hadoop.

Another exciting feature that’s part of the Machine Learning Track is Apache MXNet. This project is incubating right now under the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) but has grown and evolved over the last couple of years. I am excited to have a homegrown project from Seattle, where I’m located, grow to become a worldwide project. One thing MXNet is doing is providing another approach to observing deep learning and our track will offer several related presentations about this topic.

Apache TVM provides a way to bring the machine learning model and have it optimized for a different hardware type. For example, GPU and FPGA, are some of the accelerated hardware that can be run on Apache TVM using deep learning. We have world-renowned speaker, Tianqi Chen, who is the brain behind TVM, MXNet, and XGBoost. He created all these projects and we are excited to have him present at our ApacheCon Machine Learning Track.

 Q: What makes this a must-attend track?

A: The Machine Learning Track will focus on all aspects of machine learning and deep learning frameworks. We will explore how it runs on top of the big data ecosystem using Hadoop and how it seamlessly integrates with these frameworks. For example, we will look at how to integrate it with the data source and have it run on Hadoop Submarine and also other projects, like Apache Zeppelin, while remaining interactive and effective. I encourage everyone to check out the Machine Learning Track at ApacheCon for more information about these concepts.

I'm looking forward to there machine learning presentations. This is an area that is growing and evolving quickly and I'm happy to see there's more attention given to this area. I definitely suggest checking out ApacheCon and coming out to learn about these innovations.

ApacheCon Q&A with Streaming Track Leader Felix Cheung (Part Two of Three)

At ApacheCon North America, Felix Cheung, a member of the Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache Spark, Zeppelin, and Incubator, will be leading the Big Data, Machine Learning and Streaming tracks. Below is what to expect from the Streaming Track. Also, be sure to check out Felix’s full podcast interview on our Streaming Track Feathercast.  Plus, find the full series of ApacheCon Q&As and Feathercasts interviews with Felix and other track leaders below along with helpful links..

Q: Tell us about the Streaming Track.

A: The Streaming Track is going to involve a mix of powered by Apache projects, use cases and innovations around event sourcing, interactive query, and streaming SQL. What’s interesting about this track is that we received an overwhelming response from the community in terms of submitting streaming-related speaking proposals.

We decided to have this as a dedicated track so that we can focus on the many interesting learning uses cases. There will be a lot of interesting presentations on different projects like Kafka as well as newer projects

Q: What can attendees look forward to at this track?

A: The Streaming Track provides great ways to learn about trends, newer developments and innovations. Companies will be interested in learning more about Interactive Query and Streaming SQL developments.

The Streaming SQL presentation will address the entire topic and examine how to resolve relationships between streaming data and syntax extension in regards to carrying data that comes along within stream processing. We will have Kenneth Knowles and very knowledgeable people from different companies presenting this information about this space, including Julian Hyde.

Meeting and talking to project leads and committers in person is another valuable benefit to attending the track. By asking questions and learning, attendees can find themselves working with these projects as well.

ApacheCon Q&A with Big Data Track Leader Felix Cheung (Part One of Three)

At ApacheCon North America, Felix Cheung, member of the Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache Spark, Zeppelin, and Incubator, will be leading the Big Data, Machine Learning and Streaming tracks. Below is the first of three Q&As with Felix on what to expect from each track, starting with the Big Data Track Q&A below. You can also listen to Felix’s full podcast interview on our Big Data Feathercast.. Plus, find the full series of ApacheCon Q&As and Feathercasts interviews with Felix and other track leaders below along with helpful links..

Q: Tell us about yourself. What are you working on at ApacheCon this year?

A: I’ve been contributing to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) for over four years. I am a member of the PMC for Apache Spark, Zeppelin, and Incubator projects. I’ve been at Uber for almost two years and have been leading the data platform team.

This year at ApacheCon, we’ve created a set of tracks, including the Big Data Track, the Machine Learning Track, and the Streaming Track. Overall, the three different track sessions include about seven days of content and over 40 sessions in total.

Q: What can attendees look forward to in the Big Data Track?

A: The Big Data Track will showcase new Apache Incubator projects, like Iceberg and Nemo, as well as how Apache projects are staying relevant with new technology. Attendees will learn about the types of companies leveraging the “Apache Way” in their projects and understand how enterprises are using big data technologies.

Ryan Blue from Netflix will be speaking at our first session. We also have several people from Alibaba and Cloudera talking about technologies like Kubernetes, Cloud, and Ozone. We will be discussing some of the new computing, storage and cloud developments in space. Track presenters will share how they leveraged the Apache Way in big data and real-time optimization projects by LinkedIn, Alibaba, and more. The last session in this track is enterprise themed and we’ll discuss Hadoop updates as well as cloud storage.

Q: What makes this a must-attend track?

A: Big Data has been one of the biggest industry trends for the last decade or so. By observing how a vast amount of data can be used to gain insights, attendees will learn how it brings value to many different companies across the industry.

I'm very excited for attendees to see the latest trends and developments from different companies and different communities. The Big Data Track will feature several upcoming Apache Incubator projects, which is a great way to extend our support in the Apache Software Foundation and the community.
